Apache Subversion is a software versioning and revision control system distributed under the Apache License. Software developers use Subversion to maintain current and previous versions of files such as source code, web pages, and documentation. It is the most successful successor to the widely used Concurrent Versions System (CVS), and it still remains compatible with it!

CVS is a pretty simple version control system. Mostly, Apache SVN has matched or exceeded CVS's feature set already. Anyway, those features still could be seen in Subversion's particular design.

In SVN, the system maintains versioning for directories, renames, and file metadata (but not for timestamps). Users can move and/or copy entire directory trees very quickly while retaining full revision history.

• Performs versioning of symbolic links
• Provides native support for binary files, with space-efficient binary-diff storage
