confidential computing network for cross-database DNA matching

GENXT provides a peer-to-peer confidential computing protocol for privacy-by-design collaborative genomic data analysis without data disclosure among participants.

The first network application is a Confidential Cross-Database DNA Relatives Matching that allows personal genomics companies to provide their customers with network-discovered matches.

The protocol is based on GA4GH standards enhanced by privacy-enhancing Confidential Computing technology, which provides hardware-enforced confidentiality and integrity protection of data while it's in use by performing computations in a hardware-based Trusted Execution Environment (TEE).

The protocol employs the GA4GH-approved Crypt4GH encryption file format at every stage of the data processing life cycle, providing an encryption key only for trusted software instances executed in TEE.

The protocol defines a mediated peer-to-peer network consisting of independent Nodes implementing their own policies and a Mediator providing network discovery.

Nodes are Confidential Computing applications that provide DNA matching services within their locally-controlled databases in accordance with their own policies for other Nodes.

Nodes rely on the Mediator for network discovery and communication consistency through the task queue that contains task statuses only.

Nodes are hosted by personal genomics companies, and the Mediator is hosted by GENXT.

The network works inside VPN isolation with data flow comprises of one-to-one interaction among the Nodes.

Nodes employ a free open-source genomic relatedness detection pipeline, GRAPE, which is reliable and accurate for detecting close and distant degrees of kinship.

Node software is deployed (and controlled) by personal genomics companies from a trusted repository maintained by an independent cyber-security company providing audit for compliance with the declared logic.

Nodes attest to each other genuineness and trustworthiness by TEE Remote Attestation which provides them with a unique secret that is used for establishing end-to-end TLS connections terminated directly in TEEs.

The solution is currently compliant with data protection regulations in the UK, EU, and Japan, having a legal stack developed by the international law firm.
